Muriel Torchia Shyjak has been blazing trails and looking to make a difference since stepping into the construction industry in 2005. She holds a degree in Environmental Design and a combined 10 years of experience as both a Commercial and Industrial Lighting Designer and a Marketing Coordinator for an electrical wholesaler on a National team.
Muriel and her partner purchased MG Electrical/Mechanical Services Ltd in 2016 and she began a new chapter in her career as business owner of an electrical, mechanical, and technical contracting company in Winnipeg. She has worked in almost every capacity at her company, knowing that being successful means understanding every role and all aspects of operations. She currently manages all larger scale projects and the field teams. Muriel is also passionate about seeing other women enter and succeed in the construction industry. She sits on several advisory boards, volunteers at mentorship events, and speaks at events to promote and encourage meaningful change.
Muriel’s words of wisdom for a budding entrepreneur: Grow your network and ask for help – there will always be tough times so it is beneficial to have a strong circle of support and the resilience to keep moving forward. Build your own resilience by practicing creative problem-solving under pressure, negotiating and influencing change, being flexible in your expectations (the ability to quickly pivot), and finding healthy and fun ways to manage stress.
